Root Android Phone Without Using TWRP Recovery

In summary, We can root an Android device in two ways; one uses a custom recovery like TWRP while the other is without the use of any recovery at all. This article explains the steps that you need to know about how to Root an Android device without TWRP recovery and PC.

For one who does not know, when we root a device than a small su (SuperUser) file gets placed in the system directory of the Android device. This file lets you have administrative privileges. Like this one shall have complete control over the device, once you get access you can tweak device settings as needed. Moreover, you can also install many mods, audio hacks, frameworks, and many more.

You may have a question that why you should opt for such a method of rooting? This has many reasons:

  1. You do not need to perform the extra step of installing this when you can do away with it easily.
  2. When you install this, you shall not receive any OTA updates which are very important; these do not only bring specific features but also carry monthly security updates released by Google. Not getting them would be a big loss.

You need this to flash a custom ROM, Kernel, mod, and other .zip or .img files. For now, we are only concerned with rooting.

Let’s get started!

How To Root Android Devices Without TWRP Recovery and PC

How To Root Without TWRP and PC

For this you need to perform 2 steps:

  • The device needs to be booted by using a patched boot image file.
  • This image file shall be flashed permanently using the Magisk Manager application.

Step #1: Prerequisite (Magisk Installation Without TWRP)

Install Magisk Without TWRP

  1. Download and install this file on the device: Magisk App (version 23 onwards).
  2. Check if the device has a ramdisk or not. For that launch this app and refer to the section under Magisk, you are good to process if it says yes, but if it says no then head to another guide.
  3. The bootloader shall be unlocked.
  4. Enable “USB Debugging” option. For this go to settings > about phone > click on build number 7 times > go back to settings > developers options > toggle on USB debugging switch.
  5. This shall wipe your data off but it is suggested to have a complete backup.
  6. Keep the device charged, and have at least 50% of charging.
  7. Install ADB and Fastboot tool to enter fastboot commands.
  8. Download and get USB drivers for the device, this helps to connect your device to the PC.

Step #1.1: Get your stock Boot.img ROM File

First, you need to extract the stock boot.img file, this is a bit complex as you cannot simply extract the firmware and get the required partition files. The reason is that OEM packs ROM’s IMG files inside an encrypted package. Like OnePlus has such files inside payload.bin, Realme, Oppo has theirs inside OZIP format, and many more.

As you hold this image file, patch it through Magisk and flash it through fastboot commands. The function for both the old and new builds of this manager remains the same. The following update is for a device that runs Android 11, if not then you need to head to step 2A/2B.

Important information: Many users of Android 11 are facing this issue to resolve:

  1. Install Magisk Canary build despite the stability.
  2. Change the update channel to Canary from the app itself.
  3. Once done, follow the steps to patch the stock boot file using Magisk and flash it through fastboot commands.

Step #1.2: Patch Stock Boot Image File with the help of Magisk (Old App)

Patch Stock Boot Image File

  1. Download “stock firmware”.
  2. Extract “boot. img file” from it.
  3. Transfer this to the internal storage of the device.
  4. Install this app on the device.
  5. Open it, click on the “install” button, next to its status.
  6. Again click “install” in the next menu.
  7. Click “Select and patch a file”.
  8. Go to internal storage > select stock boot.img file which has been extracted earlier.
  9. Let it now do the patching process. Once done, copy this file named “magisk_patched.img” from the device to the system where you installed ADB and Fastboot tools.

Step #1.3: Patch Stock Boot Image File with New updated Magisk (More reliable)

  1. Open this application on a pixel device.
  2. Click on the “install” option lying next to magisk.
  3. From the method section, click “select and patch a file”.
  4. Browse to extract the file and select it.
  5. Click on the “let’s go” option present at the top right.
  6. It shall now load the file and patch it accordingly. Once done, you shall get a download complete message.
  7. Patch file shall be saved in internal storage > download. Its name shall be magisk_patched.img.

As the file has been patched, flash it on the device and get root without TWRP. There are two ways in which this can be done; through fastboot commands or Magisk. We suggest that you go with the former method. For the Magisk method, we shall be using the Direct Install feature which is absent in many devices. To avoid any confusion go with the fastboot method and if there is any error then go with the other to root the Android device without TWRP.

Step #1.4: Install Patched Boot Image Using Fastboot

Install Image with Fastboot

  1. Connect the device to the system through USB cable.
  2. Transfer patched file from the device to a platform-tools folder on the system.
  3. In the same folder, click right on the empty area while pressing the shift key.
  4. Choose the “Open PowerShell window here” option.
  5. You can also go to platform tools on the system, type “cmd” in the address bar, and hit “enter”. This shall launch the “command prompt”.
  6. To make sure the device is successfully connected type:
Adb devices
  • To boot device to fastboot/bootloader mode:
Adb reboot bootloader
  • To flash patched boot image file:
Fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
  • For devices with A/B partitions, you must flash patched boot files to both. For this type:
Run this first: Fastboot flash boot_a magisk_patched.img
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
After run this: Fastboot flash boot_b magisk_patched.img
  • You might reboot the device by typing:
Fastboot reboot

Stop here if the device is rooted. If this method did not work out like in our case, proceed to install patched boot.img. Here is the full list of Fastboot commands if you want to customize the experience further.

Step #1.5: Install Patched Boot Image file Through Magisk

  1. Open Magisk application.
  2. Click on “install”.
  3. The dialog box that appears, click on “install”.
  4. Under the select method, choose the “direct install (recommended)” option.
  5. Now, this shall begin to flash the patch boot image on the device.
  6. Once done, click on the “reboot” button at the bottom right corner.

You have rooted your device successfully without TWRP recovery. Isn’t this amazing?
